Prenatal Massage Technique & Benefits

There's nothing more calming than a massage to rub away the aches and pains of pregnancy.  It can even be one of the most helpful indulgences during your pregnancy.

At Tampa Bay Sports & Medical Massage we use a pregnancy massage table. It is a table designed to house a woman's pregnant belly allowing you to lie face down safely. We can also position a woman comfortably on her side with pillow support, which aids her comfort in the later stages of pregnancy.

Why Pregnancy Massage?

Studies suggests that massage therapy can have multiple positive effects during pregnancy, including:

  • Reduced anxiety

  • Lessened back and leg pain

  • Reduce swelling in your hands and feet

  • Better-quality of sleep

  • Reduced levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine

Massage can also enhance blood flow, which is so important when you're pregnant, and maintain the proficiency of your lymphatic system, flushing out toxins from your body.

Other studies of prenatal massage in depressed women have found:

  • Improved levels of serotonin and dopamine, the "feel-good" hormone’s

  • Decreased levels of the stress indicator, cortisol

  • A general improvement in disposition

Pregnancy Massage Safe Techniques

  • Our specialty table we use has a cutout to allow you to lay comfortably on your stomach.

  • Prenatal massage will involve gentle pressure unlike other massage techniques you would receive when you are not pregnant.

  • Light pressure is key during pregnancy as pregnant women are more vulnerable to blood clots.   Deep tissue work on the legs can dislodge these.

  • All leg strokes should move towards the heart. This prenatal technique will keep your circulation strong and your risks low.

Be sure to keep communication open with your therapist during the massage if you experience any discomfort.

Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?

That would be a resounding yes! Maternal massages are considered safe after the first trimester, if you get the go ahead from your OB and inform your massage therapist that you are pregnant.

Throughout pregnancy a woman’s posture fluctuates considerably, your massage specialist needs to take time before the session to take note of any changes. This can help address any alignment issues causing discomfort or chronic pain.

Postpartum Massage

Whenever you feel comfortable, it’s safe to receive postpartum massage, in most cases. Be sure to check with your doctor first, especially if you have or had any medical difficulties.

Always be sure to regularly check in with your physician during the recovery process to make sure everything is healing correctly.

Some positions may be more uncomfortable than others, yet all massage therapy positions are safe after delivery. Tell your licensed massage specialist about any issues before your session and they will adjust to your needs.
